TATA EV : The Tesla of India

Tesla of India - Tata

Well almost all of us have heard about Tesla. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla is trying to introduce Tesla in India, but because of the higher taxes, he's planning to do it later. The Indian Government wants Tesla to make cars in India itself, and they will get subsidies and benefits here. So because of all these Tesla is unable to enter the Indian market. Maybe we don't ever need Tesla in the Indian market. Basically, our Indian company can make an electric vehicle with world-class technology. So from the Indian company, we mean Tata Motors. You won't believe, that Tata Motors has created a revolution in electric vehicles, it's so big that you might not have seen such here earlier. You might have to wait till 2030 to know what Tata has created and how they are ahead of others in this segment. Tata is holding a 90% share in the electronic vehicle market in India, and the rest 10% is held by companies like MG and Hyundai. Tata Motors has done what other companies had failed to do.

What does Tata Motors do?

Tata Motors has brought electric cars to the market in the first place. Many other companies operate in India, Maruti is still thinking about their electric cars, the market is not that big, Hyundai has Kona, and MG has ZS EV. So Tata Motors has jumped into the market and brought their EVs and in fact, set up charging stations as well.

How Tata made Nexon EV?

The story starts from 2017-2018, Tata Motors got a project in which it is said electric vehicles will going to be the future, and how they can create an electric car as soon as possible. At that time Tata decided to take their existing petrol and diesel vehicles and they tried making an electric car by making some modifications to the petrol and diesel cars. So for these, they wanted to choose a car that is strong enough and tested for the Indian road conditions, and the pricing should be something that Indian buyers can afford. So Tata has taken their Nexon and made modifications and transformed it and launched their first EV.

At the initial time, it was okay! but now the response is so huge that any other company is unable to compete with them. This car solely captured 90% of the market, as the pricing of this car is good, and people are buying it more for city travel in the metro cities. Even Mahindra's Reva which came first in the market couldn't compete with the Nexon EV. Tata Motors has launched Nexon EV Max, and they have claimed that it has a range above 400km. Tata Motors is still bringing their electric vehicles under 20 Lakhs which is indeed great pricing for EVs.

Tata in EV Infrastructure

They have made the EV but how will the car get charged. Well, people, will set up charging stations at their homes but, there is a twist in the story, here Tata set up their charging stations. Here Tata has used their whole Tata ecosystem, for charging they have taken help from Tata Power, who can set up charging stations in different places. Currently, they have 1700+ charging stations covering 200 places and they are expanding this.

Tata A Global EV Leader

If Tata has achieved all this in the last 2-3 years time span. Then what they will do in the coming 10 years, they could be the global market leaders. Well, they have nicely set up the charging infrastructure in India, and it is spreading very fast. There's a company named Tata Elxsi, which makes software for Tata Motors, Tata Steels is there, whose products are used by Tata Motors to make cars.

Tata EV 1st Generation

Well, Tata has started very well, but what about the future? Well, recently Tata has shown us a glimpse of the future in April. The 1st generation of EVs by Tata is they have taken a petrol or diesel car, modified them and added a motor and battery to it, and presented it to the buyers. Making these vehicles are easy for them.

Tata EV 2nd Generation

Tata Upcoming EV : Tata Curvv

Tata's 2nd Generation of EV will be its Tata Curvv. Here Tata is making such a car which is firstly an electric vehicle, and it will be made with the motive of making an electric car, and later a petrol and diesel version will also be launched. So this is what they are doing with the Tata Curvv, but they are mainly focusing on the electric version of it.

Tata EV 3rd Generation

In the upcoming few years, Tata will bring their 3rd generation of EV, and they have claimed that it will have a 500km+ range and it will be a truly electric vehicle only. This vehicle will only be launched as an electric vehicle only, it will not have other petrol or diesel version of it. Avinya, the concept car by Tata is a very futuristic car that Tata is working on and we can see that in the future. Well, Tata has achieved many impossible things that couldn't be achieved by companies like Hyundai, Maruti, etc.

Well, Tata has achieved all these in a very small time in fact companies like Tesla took so many years to make it possible, whereas Tata has made it possible in around 2-4 years' time, that even Maruti and Hyundai failed to achieve. All the credit for these goes to Mr. Ratan Tata. In 2008, he have took a great decision that made a win-win situation bringing Land Rover and Jaguar into the Tata Motors Group. At that time Ford's condition was pretty bad, and Tata have taken Land Rover and Jaguar for $2.5 Million. At that time the condition of Land Rover and Jaguar was not that good, but they had a good brand presence. Tata Motors had wanted to do something like Land Rover's car has in it. It is because at that time Tata's cars were unreliable and designs were not stylish, and they were far behind other companies. So for solving these problems, they acquired Land Rover, and they have brought in the engineers of the Land Rover to the Tata Motor Group, and taken their technical knowledge for making a good car, and then Tata started making their cars in a better way. So we all can see the reliability of Tata's cars in the last 4-5 years.

Tata's cars are the safest cars in the market, not only in India but also at the global level as well. Even the platform of the Tata Harrier and Land Rover are the same. That means Tata is designing their cars from people outside the country and making cards for the local market better.

Well, Tata has done a great job in the market, if they move at this pace they will be the market leader, and who knows Tata might replace Tesla in India also.
